The first time I heard of the Duke of Edinburgh Cup was in 2005 when I was invited by a friend to the local qualifying event in South Africa. I was fortunate enough to win and qualify for the World Finals, little did I realise what I was about to experience.
Having had such a great time in 2005, I could not resist the chance to return, and by means of auctions I attended the next two years. In the process I was able to support the international charities, and very worthy causes that present young people with development opportunities in South Africa.
In 2007 my colleague, Keith Wrede and I won the World Pairs and received the trophy from HRH The Prince Edward at the Prize Giving Dinner in one of the main State Apartment rooms in Windsor Castle, this was an honour and privilege in itself.
The whole World Final week is a fantastic experience enhanced by meeting the people who are responsible for organising the event. Their dedication is commendable and is reflected in the many friends that we have made over the years.
I will continue my support and hope to return again in 2008.
The Duke of Edinburgh Cup really does rank up there as one of the top events in the Dubai golfing calendar. There is a special air and grace to the whole tournament which carries through from the qualifying rounds to the finals in England.
The gala dinner and function at Windsor Castle is a magical finale that can only be described as a priceless experience for such a worthwhile cause. I look forward to supporting the trustees of the charity by sponsoring and participating in future events.
